The Lake Forest College men's hockey team posted a dramatic 7-6
victory in overtime at Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday
night. The Foresters are now 9-14-2 on the season and lead the
two-game MCHA Harris Cup quarterfinal series 1-0-0. The Raiders
fell to 13-11-2 on the year.
The home team scored first in the contest at the 8:50 mark of the
opening period. The Foresters were out-shot 23-8 in the game's
first 20 minutes but led 2-1 after a power play goal by senior
Peter Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Walpole Stars) at 14:35 and
classmate Sean Farley's (Park Ridge, Ill./Utica College) ninth
score of the year at 17:44. Fellow senior Justin Taylor (Sun
Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) and freshman Thomas Bark (Toronto,
Ontario/Streetsville Derbys) assisted on Pfeffer's goal and junior
Anthony Ventura (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Lebanon Valley College)
helped set up Farley.
An unassisted shorthanded goal by Bark at the 3:26 mark of the
second period gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage. The Raiders,
however, scored a shorthanded goal of their own just 55 seconds
later and tied the score at the 5:57 mark. Lake Forest regained the
lead on Pfeffer's second power play goal of the game at 9:54. His
six score overall this season was assisted by freshmen Mike Rubino
(Woodbridge, Ontario/St. Michael's Buzzers) and Trent Brown (Ayr,
Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings). M.S.O.E., however, tied the game again
at 12:35 and took the lead just 15 seconds later. The Raiders
out-shot the Foresters 18-9 in the period.
A power play goal by the Raiders just 18 seconds into the third
period gave the home team a 6-4 advantage, setting up Lake Forest's
dramatic comeback. Rubino and Taylor assisted on Bark's second goal
of the game and seventh this year at 8:27. The power play score
trimmed the deifict to one. Senior Adam Love (Durham,
Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings) then tied the contest with 3:02
remaining in regulation. Pfeffer assisted on Love's ninth goal of
the year. The Foresters finished the period with a dozen shots on
goal, one more than the Raiders.
The game ended three minutes and 20 seconds into the overtime
period when sophomore Chad Thompson (Rockwood, Ontario/Listowel
Cyclones) lit the lamp for the first time as a Forester.
Lake Forest freshman goaltender Austin Erney (New Ringgold,
Pa./Vermont Academy) entered the game early in the third period and
stopped all 12 shots on goal he faced, including a penalty shot
with 4:38 to play in regulation and his team trailing by one. It
was his first collegiate victory.
The teams will face off again in game two of the series at 4:00
tomorrow afternoon. A tie or a Lake Forest victory would put the
Foresters in next weekend's (March 5-6) Harris Cup Four at Adrian
College. The Raiders need a victory at 4:00 and another win in the
resulting 20-minute mini-game to advance.
