Foresters Compete at Milwaukee Classic

Foresters Compete at Milwaukee Classic

The Lake Forest College handball team participated in the Milwaukee Classic over the weekend. Forester junior Dan Cordova reached the Open Singles quarterfinals.

Cordova was the #3 seed in the tournament and had a bye in the round of 32. He posted a 21-20, 21-13 victory in the second round and took the first set 21-4 in the quarterfinals. However, the eventual runner-up came back to defeat the Foresters' top player 4-21, 21-16, 11-0.

Junior C.J. Laffey was the only other Lake Forest player to advance in the Open Division. He won 21-8, 21-16 in the first round but fell 21-14, 21-12 in the round of 16 to the same player that knocked off Cordova.

Freshman Anthony Collado posted a victory in the Open Consolation bracket but was eliminated in the division's quarterfinal round.

Lake Forest had a pair of quarterfinalists, including the runner-up, in the Men's C Division. Junior Rick Arko had a first-round bye before rattling off three straight wins to reach the championship match. Sophomore Sam Herrmann was defeated in the quarterfinals by the eventual champion.

On the women's side sophomore Christi Valicenti defeated three opponents in a row to finish as the B Division runner-up. Junior Amber Craghead advanced to the semifinals and sophomore Katrine Burr the quarterfinals in the same bracket. Four other Foresters fell in the round of 16, including senior Camila Quinteros, who won her opening match 21-16, 21-12.

Quinteros and freshman Lisa Ledvora reached the final in the Women's B Consolation bracket and their match will be played at a later date. Quinterson had to get past junior Caitlin Shetterley in the semifinals.

It was the final tournament of the fall semester for the Foresters, who will not compete again until the Illinois Handball Association State Singles Tournament January 17-19.
