Forester handball players competed in the Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournament over the weekend (February 11-14).
Lake Forest senior Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) and junior Nikolai Nahorniak (Elk Grove, Ill.) claimed the Open Division title on the men's side, edging out alumni Dave Munson '04 and Mike Munson '01, in the finals. Lee and Nahorniak won the first game 21-8 but fell 21-9 in the second. They took a 9-2 lead in game three before dropping eight straight points. Trailing 10-9, they regained the serve and closed out the 11-10 victory.
Juniors Victor Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) reached the quarterfinals before falling to the Munson brothers.
In the women's Open Division senior Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.) and sophomore Maria Dugas (Halifax, Nova Scotia) defeated senior Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.) and junior Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo.) 18-21, 21-3, 11-7 in the semifinals. They lost 21-10 in game one of the final against Megan Mehilos '04 and Terry Mehilos but rebounded for a 21-15 victory in game two. The Mehilos' took game three 11-2 to win the title.
Juniors Bianca Greene (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill.) reached the Open semifinals before falling to the eventual champions. They went on to win in the semifinals of the Women's B Division before they were defeated by Zender and Brusig in the final.
Sophomore Dan Sterrett (Oak Park, Ill.) and freshman Derrick Contreras (Des Plaines, Ill.) defeated freshmen Clark Creasey (Lexington, Ky.) and Justin Novak (Miami, Fla.) 21-13, 21-17 in the Men's C Division final.
The final event on Lake Forest's schedule is the United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships, which begin on Wednesday, February 24, and continue through Sunday, February 28.
