Suhn Lee Sweeps Singles and Doubles Championships at Circle City

Lake Forest College handball players competed at the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis over the weekend (January 29-31). The Foresters took home the titles in six different divisions, including Open Singles and Open Doubles.

Senior Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.), the event's top singles seed and defending champion, defeated each of his three Open Singles opponents in two games, including Forester alum Bill Mehilos '02 21-18, 21-3 in the final. Juniors Nikolai Nahorniak (Elk Grove, Ill.) and Victor Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) reached the semifinals and quarterfinals, respectively, before falling to Mehilos, who claimed the Illinois Handball Association Singles title earlier in the month.

Junior Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) advanced to the semifinals of the A Singles division and freshman Isaac Acosta (Ozone Park, N.Y.) reached the bracket's quarterfinal round.

In B Singles senior Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.) prevailed in a hard-fought 21-16, 16-21, 11-9 decision in the quarterfinal round.

Freshman Derrick Contreras (Des Plaines, Ill.) claimed the title in C Singles, winning the division's championship match 21-20, 14-21, 11-6. He also needed three games to eliminate senior Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.) in the semifinals. Freshman Clark Creasey (Lexington, Ky.) won his first-round match before falling in the quarterfinals.

The women's A and B divisions were made up completely of Lake Forest players. Junior Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo.) defeated classmate Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill.) 21-10, 17-21, 11-10 to claim the A title and senior Viri Del Bosque (Rockford, Ill.) won 21-11 in both games against freshman Amalia DeSardi (Palatine, Ill.) in the B division.

Lee and Nahorniak knocked off Mehilos and Mark O'Leary '01 21-9, 21-10 to win the Open Doubles competition. Perez and Jarvis reached the division's semifinals before falling to the runners-up.

Contreras and sophomore Dan Sterrett (Oak Park, Ill.) finished second in the B Doubles division and the team of Ulbert and sophomore Maria Dugas (Halifax, Nova Scotia) also reached the semifinals before falling to the eventual champs.

Zender and Brusig won both of their round robin matches in the C Doubles division, including a 14-21, 21-7, 11-3 decision over Creasey and freshman Justin Novak (Miami, Fla.). Creasey and Novak were 1-1 in round robin play.

The Women's Contenders Doubles division was made up of four Lake Forest teams. Moser and junior Bianca Greene (Santa Monica, Calif.) defeated junior Emma Swanson (Lincolnshire, Ill.) and sophomore Ann Szutenbach (Chicago, Ill.) 21-1, 21-10 in the final.

The next event on Lake Forest's schedule is the Illinois Handball Doubles Tournament February 12-13.
