Foresters Perform Well at IHA State Doubles Championships

Sophomore Chandler Straw and senior Max Roberts won the A Division title and several other Lake Forest College duos teams found success at the Illinois Handball Association State Doubles Championships over the weekend.

After falling in the opening round of the Open Division, Straw and Roberts rattled off three consecutive victories to win the A bracket. They dropped the first game in their semifinal and championship matches before coming back to win.

The Foresters' top men's team of seniors Leo Canales and Ricardo Palma prevailed 21-8, 21-10 in the round of 16 and 21-3, 21-5 in the quarterfinals of the Open Division before being eliminated in the semifinals. Freshman Anthony Sullivan and sophomore Devin Peters also posted a victory in the Open bracket while seniors Carter Kounovsky and Jonathan Vargas advanced to the semifinals of the A Division.

Lake Forest fielded four complete doubles teams in the Women's B division, where five tandems competed in a round-robin format. Junior Quinn Jagodzinski partnered with sophomore Riley Frisbie and went 4-0 while junior Quinn Matuschek and sophomore Marketa Riley were 3-1. Freshman Emly Wichgers and sophomore Annabeth Gibbons finished in fourth place at 1-3.

The Foresters will have just a couple of days off from competition before heading to Missouri State University for the United States Handball Association National Collegiate Championships, which begin on Wednesday.
