Foresters Compete at Milwaukee Classic

The Lake Forest College handball team participated in the Milwaukee Classic over the weekend. Freshman Dan Cordova advanced to the Open Singles semifinals and senior Isaac Acosta (pictured) reached the round of 16.

Cordova was the #13 seed in the tournament. After winning his first match 21-13, 21-15, he posted 11-7 and 11-10 tiebreaker victories over the event's fourth and fifth-seeded players to reach the semifinal round. Acosta lost the first game 21-18 but prevailed 21-8 in the second and 11-7 in the tiebreaker to take his first round match. He was eliminated by the #3 seed in the round of 16. Sophomore C.J. Laffey fell in his first Open Singles contest before advancing to the semifinals in the Open Consolation bracket.

Lake Forest players accounted for half of the eight spots in the A Singles quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. Sophomore Eric Matiasek rattled off three consecutive victories before falling in the final. The bracket's winners also knocked off Forester senior Geoff Douglas in the semifinals and senior Clark Creasey in the quarterfinal round. Matiasek's quarterfinal opponent was senior Pete Jansen. Derrick Contreras, another Lake Forest senior, fell in the opening round but won three straight matches to take the A Consolation title.

Freshman Matthew Chu also won three consecutive matches to finish first in the B Singles competition. The only other Forester in the bracket was senior Justin Novak, who fell in the round of 16 before winning four matches in a row to take the B Consolation championship.

Senior Amalia DeSardi won once in the C Singles tournament and junior Jake Julius prevailed in the first round of the C Consolation bracket.

Junior Aimee Fadden advanced to the quarterfinals of the D Singles competition.

Lake Forest's next event will be the Illinois Handball Association Men's Singles Tournament January 17-20.
