In 2012 Mia Gurevitz, a fun-loving and energetic four-year-old, became an honorary member of the Lake Forest College softball program after being diagnosed with a brain tumor just a year prior. Mia and her family became close with the team and the campus community through frequent and meaningful participation in the College’s Relay for Life, Forester softball games and team gatherings, and other campus events. Sadly, on October 25, 2017, Mia lost her battle with cancer at the age of seven.
As an honorary member of the softball team, Mia had an enormous impact on everyone she encountered and for that reason and more, the Mia Gurevitz award was established to keep her spirit alive and close to the program with which she was such a very special member. Recipients of the award embody the positive qualities demonstrated by Mia during her lifetime, including her passion, perseverance, positive attitude, dedication, and spunk.
