Heath Ogawa Earns Honorable Mention All-American Honors in 3m Diving

Forester Heath Ogawa placed 13th in the 3-meter diving competition at the 2016 NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday.

Ogawa, a freshman, spent the first four rounds of Wednesday's 3-meter diving trials in 24th place before moving up a spot on his fifth dive. After the competitors took a short break, his round six score of 48.00 moved him up into 15th place. Ogawa slipped to 20th after seven dives and climbed a spot to 19th on dive eight. A score of 55.35 points on his ninth attempt vaulted him all the way into 12th but his spot in the consolation final (places 9-16) was in jeopardy after his 10th dive, which dropped him to 15th. Ogawa earned 54 points in the final round to finish the trials in 14th with an 11-dive score of 435.70.

The competitors first five dives carry over so Ogawa began the consolation final in 16th. He was 15th going into his final attempt of the day, but surpassed a pair of competitors with a round of 60.00 points, his best of the day. Ogawa's final score was 440.80 points.

The top eight finishers in each even are All-American and places nine through 16 are named Honorable Mention All-American by the College Swim Coaches Association of America. Ogawa is the program's second male diver to compete at the national meet, joining Forester Athletic Hall of Fame member Guy Stehley, who placed 11th in the nation off the 3-meter board in 1980.

After a day off, Ogawa will compete in the 1-meter diving competition on Friday.
