Sophomore Trevor Allen was one of two Foresters with three victories on the day as the Lake Forest College men's tennis team defeated Cornell College 5-1 before falling 5-3 to Grinnell College at the Midwest Conference Championships on Friday.
Allen and senior Ellis Lora-Arceo doubled up the #2 doubles team from Cornell 8-4 to give the Foresters a 2-1 lead going into singles action. It was the 100th career victory in singles and doubles combined for Lora-Arceo, who is just the eighth player in program history to reach that milestone. The Rams had earned the point at #3 before Lake Forest junior Dan Pivonka and freshman Nick Zazove finished off another 8-4 win at #1.
Zazove was the first to complete his singles match, defeating his counterpart at #3 6-1, 6-2. Allen then closed out a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at #2. The match-clinching point came at #5 where senior Dragan Trivanovic took both sets 6-4.
Lake Forest had fallen to Cornell 6-3 earlier in the season.
Grinnell defeated Lawrence University 5-0 to join the Foresters in the championship match, where the Pioneers came out on top in all three doubles contests.
After falling at #6 singles, the Foresters faced a 4-0 deficit. They earned the point at #5 where Trivanovic prevailed 6-3, 6-4 to join Lora-Arceo at 100 career wins. Zazove's 7-5, 6-3 triumph at #3 made the score 4-2 and Allen pulled Lake Forest to within a point of the Pioneers with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #2. Grinnell finally clinched the match and the program's 14th consecutive conference title with a three-set win at the top spot in the lineup. Lora-Arceo and his opponent at #4 were also in the third set when the match ended.
Lake Forest will finish the season 14-11 while Grinnell takes an 18-9 mark into the NCAA Division III Tournament. Cornell fell to 17-11. The tournament was held at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
The rest of the teams in the conference will join Grinnell, Lake Forest, Cornell, and Lawrence in Madison for the MWC Individual Tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.
