The Lake Forest College women's tennis team is now 3-1 after splitting a pair of matches on Sunday. The Foresters fell 7-2 at Lawrence University before winning 5-0 at Alverno College.
Tiebreakers were extremely unkind to the Foresters at Lawrence. The Vikings took all three doubles matches, including a 9-8 (7-5) decision at #2 and a 9-8 (7-2) final at #3.
Lake Forest victories in singles were turned in by freshmen Aimee Fadden at #3 (6-1, 6-1) and Nicole Stroner at #6 (6-4, 6-3). Close losses were again the story for the visitors. Lawrence's #6 player won 14-12 in a third-set super-tiebreaker and the Vikings' #2 player prevailed in three sets. In addition, second-set tiebreakers closed out matches at #1 and #4.
Despite suffering his first loss at the College, Forester head coach Jason Box liked what he saw from his team. "I was happy with the fight we had," he began. "We could have easily gone away after losing the two tiebreakers in doubles but each player believed in herself and fought for every point. I learned a lot about the character of our team today."
After the nearly 5-hour contest was over, the team climbed into the van and headed for Milwaukee to take on Alverno College. The Foresters had already claimed five victories and were leading in the other four matches when the contest was ended because of rain.
Sophomore Melika Celebic and junior Nonie Carson won 8-0 at #1 doubles and senior Natalie Atroshenko and Nicole Stroner matched that result at #3. Fadden and junior Deepika Ramachandran posted an 8-2 triumph at #3.
Celebic won 6-1, 6-1 at #1 singles and Nicole Stroner prevailed 6-1 in both sets at #5. Ramachandran did not lose a game in the first set at #3 and 6-1 first-set victories were turned in by Fadden at #2, Atroshenko at #4, and senior Michelle Stroner at #6. All four unfinished matches were early in the second set when play was halted.
