Lake Forest College freshman swimmer Sam Freedberg competed in the 200-individual medley at the NCAA Division III Championship Meet in Indianapolis on Wednesday. Freedberg placed fifth in his preliminary heat and 43rd overall with a time of 1:53.79.
The top 16 swimmers in each event advance to the evening finals, with the top eight swimming in the Championship Final and earning All-American status and places 9-16 competing in the Consolation Final and being named Honorable Mention All-American by the College Swim Coaches Association of America.
Freedberg's time was just 0.31 seconds shy of the school record he set at the Midwest Conference Championship Meet on February 14. The previous program record of 1:54.06 was set by Forester Athletic Hall of Fame member Rob Edgell 14 years ago. Edgell is alo the last Lake Forest male to qualify for the NCAA Championships. He placed 13th in the nation in the 200-IM, 15th in the 200-backstroke, and 16th in the 100-backstroke in 2000.
Freedberg will swim the 400-IM on Thursday and is ranked tied-for-20th in that event. He will also compete in the 200-butterfly on Friday. Forester junior diver Christina Pekar, a CSCAA Honorable Mention All-American off both boards in 2013, will participate in the 1-meter event on Thursday and the 3-meter competition on Saturday.
