The Lake Forest College men's swimming & diving team defeated visiting Carthage College 187-93 but the Forester women were defeated 169-111 on Saturday. Seniors Zachary Wenner and Garr Punnett were each part of four victories and junior Sarah Pekar won both diving events.
Punnett led off the meet-opening 400m-medley relay for the Forester men and Wenner was the anchor. Lake Forest finished in 4:03.69, just a second off the pool record and more than eight seconds ahead of Carthage. Wenner also won the 200m-freestyle in 1:59.11 and the 100m-freestyle in 54.11 seconds while Punnett placed first in the 100m-backstroke (1:00.69) and 100m-butterfly (57.62). They closed out the meet by helping the home team win the 400m-freestyle relay in 3:39.95.
Sophomore Kristopher Korth swam the breaststroke and freshman Orion Huey the butterfly in the victorious 400-medleey relay. Korth also won the 100m-breaststroke in 1:09.15 and the 200m-breaststroke in 2:30.21. Huey touched the wall first in the 200m-backstroke in 2:13.88 and joined Punnett, Wenner, and freshman Drake Nickell on the 400-free relay team.
Forester freshman Samuel Freedberg placed first in the 200m-butterfly (2:16.57) and 200m-IM (2:15.04). Classmate James Haney came from behind to post a thrilling victory in the 400m-freestyle, which he won in 4:21.58, just .08 seconds ahead of Carthage's returning Honorable Mention All-American.
Lake Forest freshman Mateusz Obstoj was the only male diver at the meet. He tallied 203.75 points off the 3-meter board and 224.45 points in the 1-meter competition.
Pekar won the women's 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 230.50 and 221.10, respectively.
The only other Forester female to record a first-place finish was freshman Lauren Dalecky in the 200m-breaststroke with a time of 3:01.65.
It was the season opener for Lake Forest. The Carthage men fell to 0-2 on the season and the Lady Reds evened their record at 1-1.
The Foresters will travel to Augustana College to take on the hosts and Morningside College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
