Lake Forest College pitchers allowed runs in just one inning on Tuesday but settled for a split for the second time in as many days in Florida. The Foresters fell 4-1 to Ramapo College of New Jersey before blanking Lakeland University 8-0.
Sophomore Ailee Pederson was in the circle for game one and had a one-hit shutout through five innings. Ramapo, however, rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth, the last three on a home run.
Pederson had scored Lake Forest's only run of the game a half-inning earlier. She singled with one out, stole second with two, and came home on a base hit up the middle by freshman left fielder Brooke Swiecki.
The Foresters out-hit the Roadrunners 5-4 but all five were singles.
Lake Forest started fast against Lakeland with singles from each of the first five batters of the game. Senior right fielder Elena Chrisman was third in that span and she singled in sophomore shortstop Kaylee Purgatorio in the fifth inning. Purgatorio, the team's leadoff hitter, doubled in a pair of runs in the sixth and the final run of the game came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brooke Challe in the seventh.
Freshman third baseman Cadence Dempsey and catcher Kyla Chevalier joined Chrisman and Purgatorio with two base hits in the contest. Dempsey has a dozen hits in the last six games and is batting .600 on the young season.
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Smith went the distance against Lakeland and is now 2-0 on the season. She allowed just two base hits and struck out four in her first career shutout.
The Forester defense did not commit an error in either of Tuesday's games.
Lake Forest is now 4-3 on the season. Ramapo improved to 7-2 while Lakeland fell to 5-3.
After a day off, the Foresters will take on SUNY New Paltz and the University of Minnesota-Morris on Thursday.
