Lake Forest College softball player Jessi Werner was selected as the Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week on Thursday for the second time this season. She won both of her starts and did not allow an earned run on the week.
Werner, a junior, started her week by defeating visiting University of Chicago 9-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday. After allowing an unearned run on two hits in the opening inning and a single in the second, she did not surrender a hit the rest of the way. Werner finished with five strikeouts and three walks in the six-inning victory. The Foresters also won game two 2-1.
Lake Forest also swept a doubleheader at Knox College on Saturday, defeating the Prairie Fire 14-0 in the opener and 25-3 in game two. Both contests lasted just five innings. Werner did not allow a hit in game one and struck out 13 of the 18 batters she faced in the contest. She became the first pitcher in team history with 300 career strikeouts and the second with multiple no-hitters.
Werner is now 9-1 with a 1.83 earned run average and 77 strikeouts in 69 innings this season.
MWC Performers of the Week are selected by the league's director of media and information. Werner also earned the award on March 16 and four other times during her freshman and sophomore seasons.
