The Forester men's tennis team completed its 2010 season at the
Midwest Conference Doubles Tournaments at the Nielsen Tennis Center
in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday (May 2). Lake Forest had placed
second in the MWC Team Championship Tournament two days earlier and
also finished Saturday's singles competition and Sunday's doubles
play with 61 points, the second-highest total in the league.
Grinnell College claimed the league title on Friday and finished
the weekend with 102 points. Lawrence University was third with
60.
Forester senior Joe Campagna
(Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick) and junior Chris
Paterakos (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), the 2009 conference
champions at #3 doubles, were the runners-up this year at #2. They
recorded a 6-4, 6-4 quarterfinal victory and a 6-1, 7-6 win in the
semifinals before falling 6-4, 6-2 in the title match. The duo
posted a 23-6 record on the year and a mark of 47-12 together in
their careers. They set new program records for single-season and
career victories by a doubles team. Campagna is also Lake Forest's
all-time leader with 67 doubles wins and 128 triumphs overall in
his career.
While Campagna owns the career record for singles and doubles
victories combined, freshman John Adams
(Colorado Springs, Colo./ Cheyenne Mountain) set the single-season
mark this spring. He and classmate Kevin Lasky
(Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) won 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and
6-4, 7-6 in the semifinals at #3. They were defeated 6-1, 6-1 in
the final but still finished the year with a mark of 18-8. Adams
also won once with a different partner and his team record 25
singles victories gave him 44 overall wins on the season.
After collecting a gold medal and five silvers on the weekend,
Lake Forest was voted the league's Team Sportsmanship Award winner
after's Sunday's competition.
The Foresters won a program record 20 matches on the season
against just five losses. Campagna is the only player the team will
lose to graduation next Saturday.
