Five Foresters Named All-MWC, Including Player of the Year Mahir Mameledzija

Five Foresters Named All-MWC, Including Player of the Year Mahir Mameledzija

The 2012 All-Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Teams were announced on Thursday and Lake Forest College's Mahir Mameledzija, Steven Johnson, Charlie Brey, Ethan Guenther, and Alexi Spiratos Made the list. Mameledzija was named MWC Player of the Year and Forester head coach Chris Bergmann the league's Coach of the Year.

In addition to being the league's Player of the Year, Mameledzija also earned MWC Offensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight season and he appeared on the league's First Team for the third time. The junior forward led the nation in goals per game (1.35), points per game (2.95), and goals (27) and tied for first in the country with 59 points. His goal and point totals were both team and conference records. He climbed into second place in program history with 53 career goals and 123 points and is tied-for-10th with 17 assists. Mameledzija scored in 14 of 20 contests with seven multi-goal games, including three hat tricks. 

Johnson, a junior midfielder, tied for the league lead with seven assists and added a pair of goals for 11 points. He has 18 points on three goals and a dozen assists in his career. Johnson was a Second Team All-MWC selection last year.

Brey, a junior defender, helped anchor a Forester defense that allowed just 16 goals on the season and shut out 11 of its 20 opponents. He also recorded a pair of assists.

Guenther, a senior goalkeeper, went 11-2-1 with eight shutouts in 2012. He led the league with a .897 save percentage and 0.437 goals against average. Both marks also ranked among the top 10 in the nation.

Spiratos was a Second Team selection of the second year in a row. He recorded 10 points on two goals and six assists this season and is tied for 13th in team history with 15 assists in his career.

Bergmann led Lake Forest to a 15-4-1 overall and record and 9-1-0 mark in MWC play. The Foresters captured their first conference title in 11 years and the 15th in program history. With 53 goals, Lake Forest scored 11 more times than any other team in the league and the team's 0.79 goals against average was also the best in the MWC.

The Foresters' four First Team All-MWC selections were the most in the league and they tied for first with five honorees overall.
