The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) released its Scholar All-America Teams on Friday and Lake Forest's Mahir Mameledzija and Becky Esrock made the lists. Mameledzija also added to his collection of awards later in the day when he was named a Third Team All-American by D3soccer.com.
Mameledzija, a junior forward with a 3.82 cumulative grade point average, earned second team honors on the NSCAA Men's College Division Scholar All-America listing. The Spanish and chemistry double-major was also a Capitol One Academic All-America® First Team selection (as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America) and the Third Team All-America honors bestowed on him by D3soccer.com matched the one he received from the NSCAA earlier this month. In addition, Mameledzija was named First Team All-Midwest Conference and the league's Player and Offensive Player of the Year after leading the nation with a school and MWC record 27 goals and 59 points (tied for first).
Esrock, a junior that moved from forward to sweeper early in the season, earned NSCAA Women's College Division Scholar All-America Second Team honors. The economics and international relations double-major with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average was also a Third Team All-America selection by the NSCAA and was named to the Capitol One Academic All-America® Second Team (as voted by CoSIDA). In addition to being named First Team All-MWC, she received the league's Defensive Player of the Year award after helping the Foresters record nine shutouts in her 14 games on defense. Esrock also recorded 14 points on six goals and two assists on the season.
The Forester men's and women's soccer teams both claimed conference titles in 2012. The women posted an 8-1-1 record during league play and also won the four-team MWC Tournament to advance to the NCAA Playoffs. They finished the season with an overall mark of 14-6-1. The men were 9-1-0 in conference games and 15-4-1 overall.
