The Forester women's hockey team registered a 2-1 victory over Finlandia University at home Friday night.
Lake Forest out-shot the visitors 15-4 in the opening period but the contest was still scoreless at the first intermission.
The Foresters put 27 shots on goal to the Lions' six in the second stanza and finally broke through with the game's first goal at the 8:16 mark. The score was unassisted and the first of the season for sophomore forward Danielle Selby.
A power play goal by junior defenseman Karya Dean midway through the third period gave the home team some breathing room. Another Finlandia penalty had already been signaled, allowing Lake Forest junior goaltender Hannah Turnage to head to the bench in favor of an extra attacker. The move paid off 33 seconds later when Dean put in a rebound for her first goal of the year. Freshman defenseman Abby Meyer was awarded an assist for her first career point.
The game's next penalty was on the Foresters and set up the only goal of the game for the Lions at 13:27. Neither team scored again.
Lake Forest had a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal in the final period and a commanding 54-16 edge in the game.
Turnage made 15 saves to earn the victory and maintain her .929 save percentage on the season. Her goals against average fell to 2.68.
The Foresters are now 3-6-0 overall but still perfect after three Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games. Finlandia fell to 0-10-1 overall and 0-5-0 in the league.
The same two teams will face off again in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
