Sophomore forward Lexi Morgan's short-handed goal late in the game helped the Forester women's hockey team secure a 4-2 victory over visiting Northland College Saturday afternoon after defeating the LumberJills 6-1 less than 20 hours earlier.
Morgan also scored the first goal of Saturday's contest at the 4:00 mark of the second period. Senior forward Amanda Brunges picked up an assist on the score. Lake Forest sophomore defenseman Julia Unterseher followed with the first of her two tallies on the day seven minutes later to double the home team's lead. Senior forward Olivia Spellmire and defenseman Kayla Griffith assisted on the power play goal following the LumberJills' only penalty of the contest.
Northland trimmed the margin to one at the 15:43 mark of the second and the score was still 2-1 at the end of the period, despite the Foresters' 29-6 edge in shots on goal after 40 minutes of play.
Unterseher's second score of the game and sixth this season restored Lake Forest's two-goal cushion three-and-a-half minutes into the third period. She was assisted by sophomore defenseman Amanda Boisjolie and freshman forward Kristina Bellomo.
The visitors, however, converted a power play opportunity at 11:29 to pull back to within a single goal.
The Jills chances to tie the score improved when the Foresters took a penalty with 3:13 remaining but it was the home team who took advantage when Morgan netted her team-high 19th score of the season with 1:27 to play in the contest. Senior defenseman Caroline Campbell set up the first career short-handed score for Morgan, whose goal total on the year ranks sixth in program history.
Lake Forest out-shot Northland 12-8 in the final period and 41-14 on the day.
Forester freshman goaltender Julieana Tarantino finished with a dozen saves and earned her third victory in as many appearances this year.
Lake Forest improved to 13-8-0 overall this season and 11-3-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play while Northland fell to 7-13-1 overall and 5-8-1 in the league.
The Foresters will continue conference play at St. Norbert College next weekend. The teams will face off Friday night at 7:00 and the following afternoon at 3:00.
