Michelle Greeneway Scores Four Times in Victory at Finlandia

Michelle Greeneway Scores Four Times in Victory at Finlandia

The Forester women's hockey team won its 10th consecutive game Friday night, a 5-1 decision at Finlandia University. Freshman Michelle Greeneway tied the program's single-game record with four goals in the contest.

Greeneway is the fourth Forester to post a four-goal game. The first was Robyn Slater against Hamline University on November 10, 2001. Dayna Kanis tied the mark against Chatham University in the 2005 season opener (October 28) and Laura Wilson also neeted four goals against Hamline on November 5, 2006.

Greeneway scored the first four goals of the night, beginning at the 2:34 mark of the opening period. That score was assisted by fellow freshmen Marina Alessi and Alex Stensland. Two other freshmen, Melissa Paluch and Natalie Pattison, set up the next goal at 17:36 and the Foresters led 2-0 after the first period.

Lake Forest also scored twice in the second. Senior Jenn Caldwell set up Greeneway at 11:17 and her fourth goal of the night was assisted by Paluch and junior Sarah Gilbride at 17:22.

Forester junior goaltender Stacey Dierking held the home team scoreless while making five saves during the first 40 minutes. She is now 9-0-0 and leads the nation with a 0.93 goals against average and .958 save percentage on the year.

Finlandia finally got on the scoreboard 12 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-1. Lake Forest junior goaltender Auriana Johnson made four saves while keeping the Lions off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Sophomore Erin Shamley added an insurance goal for the Foresters at the 5:11 mark. Gilbride assisted on Shamley's second score of the season.

Lake Forest had a 55-10 advantage in shots on goal on the night.

Greenway moved into sixth place in the nation with 1.53 points and 0.88 goals per game. She leads the Foresters with 15 scores and her 26 points are tied with Paluch's team-high total.

Lake Forest's 10-game winning streak is a team record and matches the program's two longest unbeaten streaks turned in by the 2009-10 squad. That team had a pair of 8-0-2 runs.

The Foresters, who are currently ranked eighth in the nation by D3hockey.com and ninth by U.S. College Hockey Online, are now 12-2-4 overall and 9-1-4 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Finlandia fell to 0-19-0 overall and 0-15-0 in the league. The same two teams will face off again at 1:00 (EST) tomorrow afternoon.
