The Forester women's basketball team closed out the 2021-22 season with a 55-49 victory over visiting Grinnell College on Saturday.
Lake Forest's five seniors were honored before the contest and the three who were able to play in the game played significant roles in the victory. Guard Ely DoBrodt led the home team with a career-high 15 points and added five rebounds and a pair of steals. Fellow guard Maddie Glennon finished with six points, three assists, and a career-high six steals. Forward Kara Schoenlein scored seven points, tied for the team lead with six rebounds, and chipped in with three steals. In addition, the Foresters outscored the Pioneers by 14 points while she was on the court.
Junior forward Annie Lally and sophomore guard Maurissa Edwards joined DoBrodt in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Edwards also had six rebounds and five steals on the afternoon.
The Foresters forced 22 turnovers while committing only 13 in the game. That disparity, along with a 12-7 edge in made free throws, helped overcome the Pioneers' 45-31 advantage in rebounds.
Lake Forest scored the first nine points and led the rest of the way. The score was 14-9 at the end of the opening period and 26-22 at halftime. The margin reached 10 points once in the second quarter and twice in the third but was back down to seven at 39-32 going into the fourth.
Grinnell closed to within two points with 5:20 remaining and again with 52.4 seconds on the clock. Edwards made the first of two free throws with 20.2 seconds on the clock and chased down the rebound after missing the second. She was 2-for-2 after being fouled again two seconds later. Glennon knocked down two more free throws with 8.6 seconds left and, after a Pioneer three-pointer, Schoenlein made a layup at the buzzer for the final two points of her career.
The Foresters finished 2021-22 with an overall record of 8-16 and a Midwest Conference mark of 5-11. Grinnell fell to 9-13 overall and 6-9 in the league with one more game to play.
In addition to DoBrodt, Glennon, and Schoenlein, fellow seniors Delaney Sjong and Adia Maund were recognized before the game.
