Despite a career-high 28 points from senior forward Hannah Hiland, Lake Forest was defeated 70-56 at St. Norbert College Wednesday evening.
Hiland, whose point total led all players in the game and was the most by a Forester this season, shot 11-for-17 from the field, connected on both of her attempts from three-point range, and knocked down four of five foul shots. She also led the visitors with eight rebounds and added a pair of blocked shots.
Junior guard Zaria Sydnor was the only other Lake Forest to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
The Foresters shot 37.3 percent from the floor while the Green Knights made exactly half of their field goal attempts. Lake Forest had a slight 35-33 edge in rebounds but committed 18 of the game's 31 turnovers.
The visitors led by as many as eight points in the first quarter and by four at 16-12 when it ended. St. Norbert took its first lead of the contest with three minutes remaining in the second period but the Foresters finished the half with a 26-25 advantage after a pair of free throws by Hiland in the final 15 seconds.
Aside from one possession during which the score was 33-33, Lake Forest was ahead throughout the third. The lead grew to as many as six points but was back down to two at 44-42 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. St. Norbert scored the first six points of the final period and led the rest of the way. After a 12-4 run by the Knights extended their edge to double figures, back-to-back baskets by Forester sophomore guard Kelsey Burton made it a six-point game with three-and-a-half minutes left. The home team, however, scored 10 of the final 12 points to finish off the victory.
Lake Forest is now 8-8 overall this season and 7-2 in Midwest Conference play. St. Norbert improved to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in the league.
The Foresters will host Monmouth College Saturday afternoon at 3:00.
