The Lake Forest College women's basketball team forced 25 turnovers but struggled offensively in a 63-48 loss to Benedictine University at home Tuesday night.
The Foresters limited the Eagles to just 37.5 percent shooting from the field but shot just 25.4 percent themselves. The noticeably taller Benedictine squad also had a 56-39 edge in rebounds on the night.
Sophomore guard Kelsey Burton led the home team with a dozen points, seven rebounds, and three assists while freshman forward Adia Maund had four steals and two of the Foresters' five blocked shots. Junior forward Molly Schoenlein was next on the squad wit nine points and she added six boards, three steals, and a block.
The Eagles led 17-10 after the first quarter but Forester senior guard Tiffany Stiewe and forward Hannah O'Day combined to score the first seven points of the second to tie the game. The score was knotted again at 22 and 24 late in the period before a pair of Benedictine free throws in the final 30 seconds gave the visitors a 26-24 lead at halftime.
Six straight points by Schoenlein early in the third gave the Foresters a four-point advantage and they led by that margin again at 40-36 with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Benedictine then closed out the period with an 11-2 run and started the fourth with 14 consecutive points to quickly put the game out of reach.
The loss dropped the Foresters' record on the season to 1-4 while the Eagles improved to 5-1.
Lake Forest will begin Midwest Conference play at home this weekend, hosting Grinnell College Friday evening at 5:30 and Cornell College at 1:00 Saturday afternoon.
