The Lake Forest College women's basketball team was defeated 67-41 by visiting Cornell College on Saturday.
The Foresters started strong, scoring 10 of the game's first 12 points, They led 10-5 after the first quarter and by as many as nine late in the second. The Rams closed out the first half with six straight points, however, and trailed by just three at 28-25 after 20 minutes of play. Senior forward Brie Majkowski and sophomore guard Bridget Bilek led all players in the contest with seven points apiece at the break and the home team had a 26-16 edge in rebounds at that points in the game.
The Rams took over in the third quarter, outscoring Lake Forest 30-4 and forcing 13 Forester turnovers in the period. The margin reached as many as 28 in the fourth.
Bilek led the home team with nine points on the afternoon while senoir forward Brittany Avonts grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and added a pair of blocked shots. Junior guard Kara Norvet dished out three assists.
The Foresters shot just 27.1 percent from the floor in the contest while Cornell connected on 36.9 percent of field goal attempts. Lake Forest had a 46-38 edge in rebounds but committed 28 turnovers to the Rams' 13.
The loss dropped the Foresters' overall record on the season to 5-16 and Midwest Conference mark to 4-12. Cornell, the first place team in the league, improved to 17-4 overall and 15-1 in the conference.
Lake Forest will travel to St. Norbert College on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. game before closing out the season at home against Lawrence University next Saturday.
