Lake Forest College softball player Emma Varsbergs was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday after helping lead her team to victory in three of four Midwest Conference games in the last week.
Varsbergs batted .455 and slugged .636 for the week, racking up five base hits, including a pair of doubles, in 11 at-bats. She also added three stolen bases on the week and now has seven stolen bases to go with a .303 batting average on the year.
The senior third baseman contributed to all three runs in the team's 3-1 triumph over Illinois College in game two on Saturday as her singles in the first and third innings and double in the fifth moved runners to third base. Each of the three scored on the next play.
Lake Forest won 1-0 and 10-0 at Ripon College on Monday and Varsbergs had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in a run in game two.
In addition to her exploits on the field, Varsbergs was also the first recipient of the program's Mia Gurevitz Award, which goes to the player, voted by her teammates, who best exemplifies the passion, perseverance, positive attitude, dedication, and spunk displayed by Mia, a member of the team through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, during her lifetime. Mia passed away at age 7 in October of 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. The award was presented on the field between Saturday's games.
Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays.
