Junior Missy Dieckman-Meyer allowed just one earned run as the Foresters defeated Montclair State University 6-2 in eight innings on Tuesday. They were then defeated 9-3 by Amherst College.

Dieckman-Meyer went the distance, allowing just five base hits and striking out eight batters while walking just one. She evened her record on the year at 1-1.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore first baseman Shaye Gauthier led off the frame with a bunt single, advanced to second on a one-out base hit by senior leftfielder Diamond Owens, and came home on a two-out double by senior shortstop Alyssa Grimm.

The Red Hawks tied the game with two outs in the sixth and the game went to extra innings tied at one.

The Foresters broke through for five runs in the top of eighth. Junior Haylee Sherlund singled in the first and junior catcher Sydney Wyatt the second. A double by Gauthier plated two more runners and a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior second baseman Maddie Trost made the score 6-1. Montclair State scored an unearned run and brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning but Dieckman-Meyer induced a ground ball to Trost for the final out of the game.

Trost joined Gauthier with two hits in the game and turned in another 2-for-3 performance at the plate in game two of the day.

Amherst scored at least once in each of the first five frames and was on the verge of ending the game a couple of innings early when the Foresters managed to score three in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff single by Trost was followed by an error and a base on balls. Another error brought home the first run and a two-out infield single by Wyatt scored the second. Senior centerfielder Maria Zepeda then raced home on a wild pitch with the third tally of the inning and the last score of the game.

Lake Forest is now 4-4 on the season while Montclair State fell to 2-2 and Amherst improved to 3-0.

The Foresters will be in action again on Wednesday, taking on SUNY-Fredonia at 3:45 p.m. (ET) and Carroll University at 6:00 (ET).
