Foresters Swept at Illinois Wesleyan

Foresters Swept at Illinois Wesleyan

Sophomore designated player Emma Carlson was 3-for-6 on the afternoon but the Lake Forest College softball team was defeated 8-3 twice at Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday.

Carlson was 1-for-3 in the opener. Her base hit in the top of the fourth inning put runners on first and second with no outs. Three batters later sophomore centerfielder Maria Zepeda singled in one run and Carlson came home on a bases-loaded walk drawn by sophomore shortstop Kat Beall.

The two-run innings made the score 7-3 in favor of Illinois Wesleyan and the home team closed out the scoring with a final tally in the bottom of the fifth.

In addition to driving in a run on a walk in the sixth, Beall also doubled in the game's first score in the top of the first. Zepeda was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and stole second prior to Beall's sixth two-bagger of the year.

The Titans tied the score in the bottom of the second inning before breaking the game open with six in the third.

After managing just four base hits in the first game, the Foresters out-hit the home team 12-11 in the second but were still defeated by the same 8-3 score.

Illinois Wesleyan took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning and added another score in the second.

Lake Forest cut the lead in half on the third home run of the season by Zepeda to lead off the third.

The Titans then struck for another big inning, scoring five times in the their half of the third, and they added one more run in the fourth.

The Foresters scored two runs in the top of the fifth, the first on a groundout by freshman first baseman Riley Frisbie and the second on a base hit by Beall. The visitors loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning and had two on with no outs in the seventh but were unable to score again.

The losses dropped Lake Forest's record on the season to 7-9 while Illinois Wesleyan improved to 8-4.

The Foresters will host a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 3:00 Tuesday afternoon. Including NCAA Tournament play, the teams have split six meetings over the last two seasons.
