Sophomore forward Aaron O'Neill's goal with 48.6 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime and the Lake Forest College men's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie Friday evening at St. Norbert College.
Trailing 1-0, the Foresters pulled senior goaltender George Argiropoulos in favor of an extra attacker with less than 90 seconds remaining in the third period and it paid off 33 seconds later. Senior forward Bron Loiselle's shot was saved but the rebound went to the goalie's left, where O'Neill was waiting. His team-high seventh tally of the season was also assisted by senior forward Cody Guidorzi.
St. Norbert had scored the game's first goal 1:46 into the second period, just seconds after the Foresters finished killing off the first penalty of the contest. Lake Forest had a pair of power play opportunities in the second but were unsuccessful on both. Two of the three least-penalized teams in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play this season combined for just three infractions in the game.
The Foresters had a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period but were outshot 23-12 the rest of the way.
Argiropoulos made 29 saves on the night, including three in the five-minute overtime period, and is now 1-1-2 with a .934 save percentage and 2.17 goals against average on the year.
The tie left Lake Forest with a 5-5-4 overall record and 3-2-2 mark in the NCHA this season. St Norbert, which entered the weekend ranked sixth in the nation, is now 8-3-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the league.
The Foresters will continue north to Finlandia University for a 4:00 p.m. (ET) face-off on Saturday.
