GRINNELL, Iowa – The Midwest Conference (MWC) Student-Athlete Spotlight is a weekly series that will highlight and promote MWC student-athletes on and off the playing field.  This week’s student-athlete is Lake Forest College men’s golfer Matt Weidner.

Weidner has played two rounds this season with a low score of 88.  He tied for 10th in a dual match against Eckerd College over spring break and has a season average of 89.5.

We caught up with the junior finance major and studio art minor from Barrington, Ill.  to gain some insight on his experience as a student-athlete at Lake Forest.

What’s your favorite class you’ve taken so far?
At Lake Forest, it is Corporate Finance.  The way we learned how organizations finance projects and how real world finance works was really interesting.  At the University of St Andrews, it would have to be Film History and Historiography.  This class exposed me to numerous genres of film and different cultures and the way they view film in comparison to the western world

Favorite sports team/teams?
Boston Red Sox for Baseball and pretty much any Chicago team after that.

Favorite late night snack?
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, nothing better.

If you could travel to one place in the world where would it be and why?
I’d go back to Cape Town, South Africa.  The city has everything from hiking to surfing, street food to fine dining, and people from all over the world in one united city working and living together.

What attracted you to Lake Forest College?
I was attracted to the University of St Andrews for the international experience (Scotland) and the great management program.  Not to mention it has the best golf course in the world.  What attracted me to Lake Forest was the closeness to home, the connections to Chicago, and small class sizes. Although I was giving up the chance to play golf at the home of golf for three more years, I was able to continue it as a student athlete at Lake Forest.

Are you involved in any other clubs/organizations on campus other than athletics? If so, what is your role with them?
I am the social media chair for Athletic council.  I am in charge of promoting and showcasing Fanatic events around the campus that get fellow students to go watch their classmate play and compete.

What are you hoping to do with your degree post-graduation?
Hope to work in the Finance world, maybe in the insurance industry on the investment side of the company.  Also planning on getting my CFA designation

What do you like most about being a student-athlete at Lake Forest?
I get to go to school during the day and spend the afternoons with some of my best friends playing my favorite sport.

What has been your most memorable moment as a student-athlete so far in your college career?
Most memorable moment has been just playing the sport I love during my time at school.
