The Forester football team broke the program's single-game scoring record for the second time in three weeks on Saturday, routing visiting Beloit College 84-3. The squad's 414 points this season are also a school record.
The Buccaneers actually led 3-0 on a 39-yard field goal on the game's second possession.
It was all Lake Forest from there, starting with a pair of rushing touchdowns by senior tailback Damon Bonds, who finished the day with a game-high 79 yards on 11 carries.
The Foresters erupted for a school record 42 points in the second quarter. Junior defensive end Alex Bendler recovered a fumble in the end zone on the first play of the period and freshman tailback Christian Johnson scored his first career touchdown on a 2-yard run. Junior quarterback tossed two touchdown passes to senior tight end Cooper Tomlin and one to junior wide receiver A.J. Jackson, who tied the team record with his 13th scoring reception of the season. Jackson also reached the end zone during the quarter on a 50-yard punt return.
Playing only the first half, Stewart completed 13 of 19 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Jackson and Tomlin shared team-high honors with four receptions apiece with Jackson's covering 65 yards and Tomlin's 37.
The only touchdown of the third quarter came on an 11-yard run by junior quarterback Vincent Wallace, one of five Forester signal-callers to see action in the contest.
A 6-yard pass from freshman quarterback Josh Gasca to senior tight end Nick Thurston on the initial play of the fourth quarter was the first career touchdown for both players. Freshman tailback Jayce Knudsen scored from three yards out and a 73-yard punt return by Jackson closed out the scoring. It was Jackson's eighth punt return touchdown as a Forester, breaking the NCAA Division III record in just 21 career games. His 202 punt return yards in the game are the most by a Forester and just four shy of the Midwest Conference record. Jackson also raised his punt return yardage total for the season to 511, breaking the program record he set in 2019.
All 12 Lake Forest touchdowns in the contest were followed up by extra points by Patrick Goldammer, who broke the program record in that category with his 11th of the day and became the team's single-season record holder earlier in the afternoon with his fourth. Goldammer is now 54-for-56 on extra points this year.
Bendler was one of four Lake Forest defenders to recover a fumble and was joined by junior safety Danny Baker, sophomore defensive lineman Taedayvion Perry, and freshman defensive lineman Donnevan Plummer. The Foresters raised their turnover total for the season to 28, recorded a dozen tackles for loss, and broke up three passes while allowing just 86 yards of total offense. Senior linebacker Dominic Johnson led the unit with six tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage, while freshman defensive end George Winistorfer added five.
Lake Forest is now 9-0 overall and 8-0 in Midwest Conference play this season. With three more victories last spring, the team's 12 consecutive triumphs matches the longest winning streak in program history.
Beloit fell to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the league.
The Foresters will host the University of Chicago next Saturday at noon. A victory would secure a conference title, NCAA Division III Playoff berth, and the first 10-win season in team history for Lake Forest.
