Lake Forest Takes Three of Four at Forester Invitational

The opening weekend of 2021 was successful for the Lake Forest College volleyball team, which won three of four matches in the Forester Invitational.

The home team began the event with a 25-22, 27-25, 25-8 victory over Mount Mary University. Sophomore Mary Gegen pounded out a match-high 11 kills and junior Madison Stevens led all players in the contest with four aces and three blocks. Fifteen of the Foresters' 26 assists were credited to freshman Maiah Moll and junior Izzi Vinjevac tallied a team-high 19 digs.

Lake Forest closed out Friday with a hard-fought 25-11, 21-25, 24-26, 27-25, 15-10 triumph over Marian University. Stevens led three Foresters with a dozen kills and double-doubles were posted by Gegen and freshman Rebekkah De Kok. De Kok led all players in the with 25 digs, Gegen added 20, and both players finished with 11 kills. Visnjevac turned in 18 digs and a pair of aces while Moll and fellow freshman setter Juli Barrientos combined for 31 digs, 29 assists, and seven aces.

Saturday's competition also started with a three-set victory for the Foresters, who defeated Benedictine University 25-19 in the opening set and 25-21 in the other two. Gegen had 11 kills for the third match in a row and also led the squad 15 digs for another double-double. Visnjevac finished with 12 digs and three aces while Moll (14) and Barrientos (12) combined for 26 assists.

The season-opening winning streak came to an end when the Foresters took on Carthage College, the fifth-ranked team in the country. The visitors rolled to a 25-13, 25-19, 25-14 victory to finish the event 4-0.

Loras College joined Lake Forest at 3-1 while Benedictine and Marian were 1-3 and Mount Mary 0-4.

Gegen led the Foresters on the weekend with 45 kills, Visnjevac with 56 digs, Moll with 48 assists, and Barrientos with nine aces. Stevens and freshman Riley Stapley shared team-high honors with six blocks apiece.

Lake Forest will play at home again on Tuesday, hosting Alverno College at 7:00 p.m.
