Foresters Prevail at Alverno in Three Sets

Senior Maxie Mottlowitz and freshman Olivia Smith each had four blocks and combined for 16 kills as the Lake Forest College volleyball team posted a 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 victory at Alverno College Tuesday night.

They worked together on three of the visitors' six blocks. Smith led the Foresters with nine kills while Mottlowitz had six and did not commit an error in 10 attempts. Freshman setter Hannah Nauert finished with 25 assists, fellow freshman Olivia Drevs served up a pair of aces, and juniors Grace Larson and Emily Witz reached double figures with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

After the home team won the first two points of the night, Lake Forest took 16 of the next 21 to take a commanding lead in set one. Alverno pulled to within four at 16-12 and 18-14 but got no closer. A Mottlowitz kill finished off the set.

Neither team led by more than four points in the second set. Forester freshman Isabel Donnelly recorded two kills and a block in a three-point run that broke a 14-14 tie. The visitors led by at least two until three straight points by the Inferno made the score 24-23. A service error, however, prevented the home team from tying the set or the match.

A six-point Lake Forest run early in set three turned a 2-1 deficit into a five-point lead. The visitors took six of seven points later in the set to pull ahead by nine and they led by at least five the rest of the way.

The Foresters are now 9-13 this season while Alverno fell to 6-17.

Lake Forest wlil resume Midwest Conference play this weekend when they host Illinois College Friday night at 7:00 and Monmouth College at 1:00 Saturday afternoon.
