Forester Defeat Grinnell, Improve to 4-2 in MWC Play

The Lake Forest College volleyball team posted a 25-16, 25-19, 25-12 victory over visiting Grinnell College Friday night. Freshman outside hitter Grace Larson led the Foresters with 14 kills and added 11 digs for her fifth double-double in the last six matches.

Larson added three blocks and an ace on Friday and is now averaging 14 kills and 16 digs in six October contests.

Junior outside hitter Paige Jespersen was next on the team with nine kills and junior middle blocker Brittany Avonts had seven. Neither player committed an attack error and they combined for a .471 hitting percentage. Avonts led the Foresters with six blocks, raising her season total to 115, the fifth-highest total in team history.

Senior libero Brianne Honda led all players in the match with 21 digs. It was the eighth time this season she recorded at least 20 digs and the third in a three-set match.

Freshman Mallory Krzysciak led the home team with 19 assists in her first match as a setter and she tied her career-high with nine digs. Sophomore setter Tori Tinman added 18 assists.

Leading the first set 11-10, the Foresters gradually pulled away and won 14 of the next 20 points to take the set. Three of the final five points were kills by Larson and she had six kills in the set.

A 10-1 run in set two gave Lake Forest a 16-7 advantage and the Foresters eventually extended the lead to 11 at 22-11. Grinnell won eight of the next 10 points before the Foresters closed out the set.

The Foresters outscored Grinnell 16-4 to take a 13-point lead in the third set. The set began and ended with a kill by Larson.

Lake Forest is now 8-14 overall this season and, at 4-2 in Midwest Conference play, is one of six teams at or near the top of the league standings with just one or two losses in conference play. Grinnell is still winless in 16 matches, including seven MWC contests, this seaosn.

The Foresters will host Cornell College (9-13, 6-1 MWC) Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
