Lake Forest Starts the Season with a Victory at the Elmhurst Invitational

The Forester volleyball came from behind to edge out Capital University 21-25, 28-30, 25-19, 25-15, 16-14 in its season opener at the Elmhurst College Invitational on Friday. Lake Forest was defeated in its final three matches of the weekend. Junior Kristen Braun had a career-high 11 kills in the opener and a team-high 10 blocks on the weekend.

Braun was actually third on the team in kills in the victory over Capital. Fellow juniors Molly McCloskey and Cori Cooper finished with 14 and 12, respecitvely. Junior Courtney Faulstick chipped in with eight kills and led the squad with three blocks. McCloskey added 10 digs for a double-double and Tia Rupnik, another junior, led the team with 19 digs. Sophomore Tori Drasler doubled her previous career-best with 46 assists.

Things took a turn for the worse for the Foresters in their next match, a 25-19, 25-18, 26-24 loss to John Carroll University. Cooper was the only player on the squad in double figures in kills with 10. Freshman Torie Pasiewicz had a team-high 13 digs while McCloskey and Rupnik added a dozen apiece. Drasler recorded Lake Forest's only two aces in the match and tallied 21 assists. Braun finished with three blocks.

The Foresters began play on Saturday with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 loss to Dominican University. McCloskey had another double-double with 10 kills and as many digs. Faulstick pounded out three aces, Brain had three more blocks, and Pasiewicz and Rupnik led the team in digs with 12 and 11, respectively.

Lake Forest's final match on the weekend was a 25-14, 21-25, 25-12, 25-16 loss to Elmhurst. McCloskey and Cooper led the way again with 16 and 13 kills, respectively, Rupnik had 17 digs, and Drasler finished with 25 assists.

The Foresters next contest will be their home opener against Wheaton College Tuesday night at 7:00.
