Foresters Defeat Lawrence in MWC Tourney Semifinal, Fall to Grinnell in Final

The Lake Forest College women's tennis team blanked Lawrence University 5-0 in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Team Tournament on Friday. The Foresters then fell 5-1 to Grinnell College in the final.

The event was played at Hitters SportsPlex in Middleton, Wisconsin.

The semifinal match began with Lake Forest sweeping Lawrence in doubles. The first point came at #2, where sophomore Margaret Bugnacki and junior Natalia Leite did not drop a game. Senior Katie Wegrecki and freshman Isa Hinojosa doubled up their opponents 8-4 at #3 and sophomore Maria Jose Campos and freshman Sara Lopez edged out the Vikings' top tandem 8-6.

Wegrecki was the first to finish in singles, rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #5. Bugnacki then clinched the team's triumph by taking both sets 6-1 at #3. Campos, Lopez, and Leite had all won their opening sets while Hinojosa was tied 5-5 early on when the match ended.

In the final Campos and Lopez once again played the closest match in doubles but were defeated 8-4 by Grinnell's best pairing. After the Pioneers earned the point at #6 singles, Campos extended the match with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at #1 but a loss at #2 ended any hopes of a comeback. The Foresters also trailed by a set at each of the other three spots in the singles lineup.

Lake Forest finished the fall semester with an overall record of 8-4. Lawrence is now 6-5 and Grinnell 10-0.

All three teams will make the short trip to Madison, Wisconsin, for the MWC Individual Tournaments, which will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
