Foresters Split Pair of MWC Matches in Iowa

The Lake Forest College fell 9-0 at Grinnell College before prevailing by the same score at Cornell College on Sunday.

The closest doubles match in the morning was at #2 doubles, where Forester sophomore Margaret Bugnacki and junior Natalia Leite were edged out 8-6. The visitors also came close to earning the point at #5 singles, where senior Katie Wegrecki was defeated 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Wegrecki and freshman Isa Hinojosa were the first to finish in doubles at Cornell and they did not drop a game at #3. Bugnacki and Leite rolled 8-1 at #2 and sophomore Maria Jose Campos teamed with freshman Sara Lopez on an 8-3 triumph at #1.

The scores in singles were just as lopsided, with Bugnacki, Leite, Wegrecki, and Hinojosa blanking their opponents 6-0, 6-0 at #3 through #6, respectively. Lopez added a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #2 and Campos closed out the contest with at 6-0, 6-4 win at the top of the lineup.

The Foresters are now 7-3 overall this season and they finished the Midwest Conference portion of the 2021-22 schedule 5-1. Grinnell improved to 8-0 overall and captured the league title at 6-0 in the league. Cornell fell to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the MWC.

Lake Forest will take on Lawrence University Friday morning in the semifinals MWC Team Tournament. The winner will advance to the final that afternoon. The MWC Individual Tournaments will follow on Saturday and Sunday. Everything will take place at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
