Kristin Ang '91 Named Forester Athlete of the Week

Kristin Ang '91 was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday for claiming back-to-back #1 singles titles at the Midwest Athletic Conference for Women Championships in October of 1988 and 1989.

Ang, who won the title at #1 doubles but settled for a runner-up finish at the top of the singles lineup in 1987, took on the same opponent in the #1 singles final a year later at South Park Tennis Club in Moline, Illinois. As they did the season before, the players split the first two sets with Lake Forest's best taking the opener 7-5 but falling 6-2 in the second. Ang's 6-4 triumph in set three gave the Foresters their first #1 singles champion since joining the MACW in 1983.

Nielsen Tennis Stadium was the site of the seventh annual MACW Championships in 1989. Ang rolled through her bracket and became the first back-to-back #1 singles champion in league history with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory in the final.

In the last three decades nine players in the conference have matched Ang's consecutive titles at #1 singles, including Lake Forest's Melika Celebic in 2009 and 2010 and current senior Julie Lord the last two seasons. Ang and Lord are the only two Foresters with at least one league championship at the top of both the singles and doubles lineups.

Forester Women's Tennis Conference Champions

Since all Lake Forest College sporting events during the fall semester have been postponed, the Athletic Department is utilizing its archives to continue the weekly recognition of high-level performances by Foresters. The department has selected a Forester Athlete of the Week since 1996, so the honorees for the rest of 2020 will have earned the distinction at least 25 years ago.

A note of gratitude goes out to Mike Dau '58, whose tireless efforts as the department's historian has made this fall's Forester Athlete of the Week research possible.
