Lake Forest to Open NCAA Tournament against Luther

The Forester women's tennis team is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater this weekend, where seven teams will gather for the first three round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Matches are set to be played outdoors at the Wangerin Courts on the Whitewater campus. Should weather force the contests to be moved indoors, the site will be Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and they will begin approximately one hour later than scheduled.

Lake Forest captured a Midwest Conference championship in the fall with a perfect 9-0 record in league play and added a title in the MWC Tournament on April 25 to secure the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Foresters enter this weekend's event 21-3 overall and ranked 13th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The team's opponent in Friday's opening round will be Luther College, which is 15-9 after winning the American Rivers Conference Tournament on April 28. The Foresters and Norse have faced off just once in the last seven seasons, a narrow 5-4 Luther win at Coe College in April of 2016. The third match of the day is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

The winner of Friday's match will advance to play the University of Chicago, the top-ranked team in the region, on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Chicago is 14-5 on the year and earned an at-large bid to the national tournament. The other four teams hoping to advance past Sunday's 12:00 p.m. third round match are Carleton College (18-2), Edgewood College (20-7), Whitewater (12-11), and the College of St. Scholastica (17-6). All four teams were automatic qualifiers after winning their respective conference tournaments.
