Foresters Sweep Doubles Titles at MWC Individual Tournaments

Foresters Sweep Doubles Titles at MWC Individual Tournaments

After going undefeated in doubles during Midwest Conference play this fall, the Lake Forest College women's tennis team swept the doubles competition at the 2018 MWC Individual Tournaments on Saturday.

The title at #1 was the second in as many seasons for the tandem of sophomore Julie Lord and junior Leeza Bodnar. They dropped just one game on the day, blanking the top team from Lawrence University 8-0 in the quarterfinals, posting an 8-1 victory against their counterparts from St. Norbert College in the semifinals, and rolling to another 8-0 triumph against Cornell College in the championship.

Senior Allison Watts and sophomore Tyranny Miller also started the event with an 8-0 win at #2. After eliminating their opponents from Illinois College in the quarterfinals, they prevailed 8-2 over Monmouth College in the semifinals and 8-4 against Grinnell College in the final. The duo now has a program record 37 career victories as a doubles team, surpassing the previous mark of 35 set by Grace Dowling and Gracie Mullins from 2012-14.

Additional history was made at #3, where sophomores Emma Wang and Grace Gould captured the title. They defeated Beloit College 8-1 in the quarterfinals and Lawrence 8-0 in the semifinals before coming out on top of an 8-6 decision against Grinnell in the championship match. The win the final was their 14th in a row, tying the team record set by Watts and Miller earlier this season.

The event will continue on Sunday with competition at each of the six singles positions. Watts, Wang, and freshman Katie Wegrecki will enter the day as the top-seeded players at #2, #4, and #6 respectively.
