Foresters Compete at MWC Individual Tournaments

Senior Lucia Stumbras was the runner-up at #3 singles on Sunday and freshman Leeza Bodnar was named Midwest Conference Newcomer of the Year at the MWC Individual Tournaments in Madison, Wisconsin, over the weekend.

Stumbras defeated the #3 singles player from Monmouth College 6-1 in both sets in the quarterfinals and eliminated her couterpart from St. Norbert College 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the championship match. Grinnell College's Megan Jans prevailed 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Lake Forest sophomore Allison Watts and freshmen Silvia Kulbokas and Samantha Russell won quarterfinal matches at #2, #4, and #6, respectively, before falling in the semifinal round. Freshman Sara Grosse was defeated in the quarterfinals before prevailing twice to win the consolation bracket.

Forester freshman Leeza Bodnar fell in each of her first two matches at #1 singles after receiving the inaugural MWC Newcomer of the Year award. Bodnar went 6-3 at #1 singles and #1 doubles during league play this fall.

The doubles tournaments were played out on Saturday with Bodnar and Stumbras winning the consolation final at #1. Watts and Kulbokas advanced to the semifinals at #2, as did Grosse and Russell at #3.

Lake Forest finished the fall portion of the 2016-27 schedule with a 8-4 overall record. The Foresters went 6-3 in league play to qualify for the four-team MWC Tournament in the spring.
