Foresters Edge Out Gettysburg, Set Team Record for Victories in a Season

The Lake Forest College women's tennis team defeated Gettysburg College 5-4 in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on Tuesday. Sophomores Christi Valicenti and Sarah Paulson each won twice to help the Foresters break the single-season school record with their 14th win of the year.

After winning 12 of 13 matches in the fall, the Foresters are now 2-0 on their Spring Break trip.

The six singles matches were played first on Tuesday and Paulson's 6-0, 6-1 triumph at #1 was the first to be completed. After the Bullets finished off victories at #6 and #3, Lake Forest senior Ellen Shapiro outlasted her opponent 6-4, 4-6, (10-6) at #4 to tie the match at two. Gettysburg regained the lead with a win at #5 but Valicenti came out on top of a 4-6, 6-2, (10-3) decision at #2 to send the contest to doubles tied at three.

Paulson and senior Lucy-George Cooper posted an 8-5 victory at #2 doubles to pull the Foresters within a point of taking the match. Valicenti and freshman Lexi Chionis then completed their 8-1 win at #1 to clinch the overall victory.

Gettysburg fell to 1-2.

Lake Forest will take on Heidelberg University Wednesday morning at 11:30 and Baldwin Wallace University at 6:30 p.m.
