Foresters Win at Monmouth, Clinch First Place in MWC South

The Lake Forest College women's tennis team prevailed 8-1 at Monmouth College Friday evening to clinch the top spot in the Midwest Conference South Division standings. Sophomore Lucy Cooper was one of three Foresters to win twice in the match.

Cooper and fellow sophomore Gracie Mullins did not lose a game in their 8-0 victory at #2 doubles. Senior Melika Celebic and freshman Christi Valicenti prevailed 8-1 at #1 and sophomore Leslie Walton teamed up with freshman Emily Rabin to defeat Monmouth's #3 duo 8-5, giving the visitors an early 3-0 lead.

Freshman Grace Dowling made her #1 singles debut and posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Mullins won both of her sets 6-1 at #2 and Cooper triumphed 6-1, 6-0 at #3. Junior Elina Shapiro won 6-0, 6-1 at #5 in her Forester debut and Walton outlasted her opponent 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at #6.

Lake Forest raised its overall record on the season to 10-2 and MWC South mark to 4-0. The Fighting Scots fell to 1-13 overall and 1-4 in the league.

The Foresters will close out the regular season at Knox College tomorrow morning at 8:30. Lake Forest will then be the MWC South's top seed in next Friday's conference championship tournament.
