Women's soccer player Maria Perkkio was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday for her performance in the team's season-opener 3-1 victory at Illinois College last Saturday.
As a holding midfielder, Perkkio's main responsibility is limiting the opponent's scoring opportunities and the only shot the Lady Blues attempted during the entire 90-minute contest was a penalty kick in the second half. In addition, when give the chance to attempt a penalty shot of her own, the senior blasted it into the right side of the goal for the Foresters' third score of the contest.
Perkkio now has four goals in her career and Lake Forest is a perfect 4-0-0 in those contests.
Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays.
