Lake Forest and Monmouth Play to 1-1 Tie

The Forester women's soccer team surrendered an early goal but came back and posted a 1-1 tie against visiting Monmouth College on Saturday. Lake Forest sophomore Sam Hillis netted her first career goal late in the second half.

Hillis, who leads the 2013 Foresters with seven assists, has 13 helpers in her career but was without a goal until her free kick with 16:15 to play in regulation flew through a crowd of players, including the Monmouth goalkeeper, and into the back of the net.

The Fighting Scots had scored the game's first goal just nine minutes and four seconds into the contest.

Lake Forest had an 8-3 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, a 10-5 edge in the second half, and had seven attempts to Monmouth's four in the two 10-minute overtime periods. The Foresters also had six corner kick opportunitites, four more than the Fighting Scots, in the contest.

Forester freshman goalkeeper Rachel Tenuta made three saves in the game, including one in double-overtime.

The tie may have cost both teams a shot at claiming the 2013 Midwest Conference championship but likely helped both squads in their attempt to qualify for the four-team MWC Tournament in two weeks. Lake Forest is now 11-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in league play while the Scots are 10-4-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the conference.

The Foresters will be back out on Farwell Field hosting Illinois College (7-8-2, 3-5-1 MWC) Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
