Overtime Victory Gives Lake Forest Season-Opening Sweep of Saint Mary's

The Forester women's hockey team scored with 38.5 seconds remaining in overtime to defeat Saint Mary's University 3-2 on Saturday.

The game-winner came on a rebound goal by senior defenseman Karya Dean shortly after Lake Forest began just its third power play opportunity of the contest. Senior forward Samantha Shoebottom attempted the first shot that was saved by the Cardinal goaltender and sophomore defenseman Sophia Chapman also assisted on the play.

Overtime was necessary after Saint Mary's tied the game with just 37 seconds remaining in regulation. Two Foresters were in the penalty box and the Cardinals had pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker when they scored.

The visitors accounted for the only tally of the opening period and the Foresters drew even in the second on a score by Shoebottom's. Fellow senior forward Stokli Ashcraft picked up her third assist of the series on the goal.

Lake Forest pulled ahead early in the third on sophomore forward Lauren Wensel's second goal and third point of the weekend.

The Foresters were assessed seven penalties, including a major, in the third and senior goaltender Hannah Turnage turned away 20 of 21 shots on goal in the period. She finished the night with 39 saves in 41 chances for a .951 save percentage.

Lake Forest had also defeated Saint Mary's 4-2 in Friday's season opener.

The Foresters will travel to Gustavus Adolphus next weekend for a series against the second-ranked team in the nation.
