3-2 Triumph over St. Norbert Gives Foresters Series Split

The Lake Forest College women's hockey team avenged Friday night's one-goal loss with a 3-2 victory over visiting St. Norbert College.

The Foresters accounted for the only goal of the opening period with 2:06 on the clock. Freshman Abby Meyer took a centering pass from sophomore Danielle Selby just after entering the offensive zone and back-handed the puck past the goal for her second score of the season. Senior Emelia Edmondson also earned an assist on the play.

Lake Forest had a 9-5 advantage in shot on goal in the first period and an 11-8 edge in the next 20 minutes. The home team's lead, however, disappeared when Green Knights finally got on the scoreboard with 49.4 seconds remaining in the second.

The score remained 1-1 until Forester sophomore Lexi Nguyen gained control of her own faceoff in the defensive zone, skated the length of the ice, and fired a shot into the upper portion of the goal to put the home team back on top at 11:37. It was Nguyen's second goal this year.

The Lake Forest lead did not last long, however, as a St. Norbert power play goal two minutes later evened the score once again.

After the teams combined for just five goals in the first 111 minutes of the weekend series, Lake Forest senior defenseman Olyvia Opsahl made it three scores in less than four minutes when she blasted one past the Green Knight goalie from just inside the blue line with 4:56 on the clock. Freshman Sophia Chapman assisted on what proved to be the game-winning score.

St. Norbert had a 13-9 edge in shots in the final period and Lake Forest junior Hannah Turnage was forced to make three saves in the final five minutes to secure the victory.

Lake Forest is now 7-7-0 overall this season and 7-1-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. St. Norbert fell to 12-5-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the league.

The Foresters will travel to Adrian College next weekend for a battle between the top two teams in the conference standings. The teams will face off Friday night at 7:00 (ET) and again at 3:00 Saturday morning.
