Foresters Finish Off Sweep of Finlandia

The Lake Forest College women's hockey team hosted and defeated Finlandia University 5-1 on Saturday.

The Foresters took the lead at the 13:49 mark of the opening period on the first goal of the season by senior defenseman Olyvia Opsahl. She was assisted by sophomore forward Lexi Nguyen.

Lake Forest out-shot the Lions 17-8 in the game's first 20 minutes but the score was still 1-0 at the first intermission.

The Foresters put 21 shots on goal to Finlandia's three in the second stanza. The home team added to its lead on freshman forward Lauren Wenzel's first career goal at 2:33 and junior forward Marissa Gebauer was successful on a penalty shot opportunity at 9:26. It was her team-leading sixth score of the year.

Sophomore forward Danielle Selby's second tally of the weekend and season made the score 4-0 early in the third and the teams traded power play goals late in the period. The Foresters' came from junior forward Stokli Ashcraft, who now has five this season.

The final shot total was 59-16 in favor of Lake Forest.

Forester junior goaltender Hannah Turnage stopped 15 of 16 shots on goal for the second straight day. She now owns a .930 save percentage and 2.51 goals against average this year.

Lake Forest improved to 4-6-0 overall and remained perfect at 4-0-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Finlandia is now 0-11-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the league.

It was the final contest of 2021 for the Foresters, who will travel to Hamline University for their next game on Friday, January 7.
