Foresters Blank Marian 7-0

Sophomore forward Olivia Spellmire had a career-high two goals and three points as the Lake Forest College women's hockey team defeated Marian University 7-0 on the road Wednesday night. It was the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both teams.

Spellmire started the scoring midway through the opening period with sophomore forward Amanda Brunges and defenseman Melissa Bodine assisting on the play. Senior defenseman Alex Stensland matched her career-high with three assists in the contest, the first on a power play goal by senior forward Melissa Paluch with 42 seconds to play in the period. Marian was cited for another penalty just seven seconds later and the Foresters capitalized again on Spellmire's second score of the contest with just eight seconds on the clock. Sophomore defenseman Kayla Griffith was credited with an assist on the goal.

Lake Forest outshot the home team 17-2 in the opening period and 20-6 while scoring three more times in the next 20 minutes. Freshman forward Amy Budde netted her first career goal at the 7:11 mark with Spellmire and Stensland assisting. Freshman forward Julianne Mauriello earned her first career point by assisting on a goal by senior forward Michelle Greeneway at 11:38. Budde then netted her second career goal and the team's third power play score of the night just 40 seconds later with assists from Stensland and junior forward Allie Girard.

Greeneway's team-high fourth goal of the year at 7:07 was the only score of the third period. Griffith picked up her second assist of the evening on the play.

The Foresters had a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal in the final period and a commanding 53-11 edge in the game.

Lake Forest senior goaltender Allie Carter needed just 11 saves for her second shutout in as many games this season. She has turned away all 23 shots on goal she has faced this year.

The victory improves the Foresters' overall record to 2-0-1 while the Sabres fell to 1-1-0.

Lake Forest will host the College of St. Scholastica this weekend. The puck drops at 2:00 Saturday afternoon and at the same time on Sunday.
