The Forester women's hockey team posted a 5-1 victory at the University of Massachusetts Boston on Friday in the Sixth Annual Codfish Bowl Championship Game. Lake Forest junior goaltender Stacey Dierking made 13 saves in the game and stopped 29 of 30 shots on goal in the tournament.
Dierking recorded seven of her saves during a scoreless opening period. She nearly posted back-to-back scoreless starts but Boston managed to score with just 30 seconds remaining to avoid the shutout.
Forester sophomore Torey Crown converted a power play opportunity to start the scoring midway through the second period. Her second goal of the season was assisted by classmate Morgan Pope.
Lake Forest doubled its lead on a power play goal by sophomore Emily Wybo with 55 seconds to play in the second period and the visitors added an even strength score by freshman Michelle Greeneway with five seconds on the clock. Freshman Melissa Paluch set up both scores, raising her team-leading totals to 15 points and 10 assists.
Wybo netted her second power play goal of the game, her third score of the tournament, and her fourth of the season at 16:27 in the third. She redirected a shot from junior Sarah Gilbride and Pope also assisted on the score. Greeneway then closed out the team's scoring with her team-high seventh goal this year. The unassisted, short-handed, empty net score occurred with 2:10 remaining in the contest.
Dierking was named the Codfish Bowl's Most Valuable Player while Greeneway and Paluch earned all-tournament team honors.
The Foresters are now 5-2-4 this season while the Beacons fell to 4-7-1.
Lake Forest will resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire next Friday and Saturday. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.
