Foresters Drop Series Opener to Nation's #7 Team

The Lake Forest College women's hockey team was defeated 5-1 on Friday by the University of Wisconsin-Superior, which entered the week ranked seventh in the country. Sophomore Morgan Pope gave the Foresters an early lead they were unable to keep.

A game after scoring the Foresters' first shorthanded goal of the season, Pope netted a power play score just two minutes and seven seconds into the contest. She as assisted by freshman Melissa Paluch, who took over the team lead in points with seven.

Superior, however, tied the score with a power play goal of its own at 9:04 and the game was tied 1-1 at the first intermission. Lake Forest had a 10-8 edge in shots on goal in the period.

The Yellowjackets scored what turned out to be the official game-winning goal at the 3:34 mark of the second and added scores later in the period at 16:19 and 19:33. They put a dozen shots on goal to the Foresters' 10 in the period.

Both teams had 13 shots on goal in the final 20 minutes and Superior scored the only goal of the period while on the power play at 14:01.

Lake Forest junior Auriana Johnson made 28 saves in her first career start.

The Foresters fell to 2-2-4 overall and 1-1-4 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Superior is now 7-3-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the league. The same two teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
